When I was 15 years old, an older kid at Lakeridge High School took me under his wing on the football field and on the track. He had already pushed through a fair bit of adversity to get where he was in high school, so it is no surprise to me that he has achieved so much in life as a husband, father, businessman, professional football player and Olympic level track athlete.
His words that have pushed me to reach so far are available in his new book. I highly recommend it. Also, he is one awesomely cool guy.

As a former teammate of JJ Birden's, during our playing days with the Kansas City Chiefs. JJ was one player I remember that made or took advantage of his God given athletic talent. Not very big physically, but he played big with his acrobatic catches, quickness and explosiveness. Anyone who thinks his or size is not enough to achieve their dreams, should take a lesson from JJ Birden. All the best to you my friend!

JJ is featured in my book, 100 Yards of Memories, as a high school FB player who for his size was outstanding. We have always kept in touch since I taught two of his sons and met J.J. as a father as well. He is one of those young men I've coached who wore his courage on his chest, was always humble, and was someone I've judged other players determination by. He was a great person as a young man just as he is today as a grown man, father, and husband. I've been truly blessed to have coached JJ and have him as a friend. He always greets me with a "Hi, Coach" and a warm hug. To have overcome all he has and maintain such a positive attitude is remarkable.

This is an outstanding book! JJ does a great job of sharing his life lessons and helping the reader understand that you can't wait for success to find you, you have to seize the opportunities when they present themselves; if you're not looking for it, you won't know what to seize. He goes on to explain that you have to be vigilant and look for your opportunities so you can seize upon them. One of the many things that have stuck with me from the book is, you have to stay committed to your goals even when you're presented with barriers, obstacles and setbacks.
I love this book and the style with which JJ wrote it. It's a quick, easy read and I know you'll enjoy it.

JJ Birden writes the way he speaks...and he speaks the way he lives. I love that this book is motivational but also personal. To see how this young man used these principles to achieve the success he has had...in life as well as in sports...is so inspirational. I encourage everyone to read (and apply!) it in their life. By the end you will feel, as I did, that it was "advice from a friend".

I just finished the book. I am NOT a sit down and read a book kind of person. I have to be sitting some place waiting or being on an airplane to allow myself the time to read. Yesterday I finished it on the back of the motorcycle on our trip from Portland to Ashland. It was a great way to help pass the time. JJ's book is an easy read. I bought a couple of extra books to give as gifts for some young people who could be served by all the valuable points JJ offers. I thought of another person yesterday that I'd like to buy the book for. I loved reading the book because I know JJ and Raina and I could hear JJ's voice in my ear as I read. I could also relate to the point that he was making in several things that I've done. I have a couple more 'whys' that I'm working on and there was a lot of good hints in the book to help keep me on track. Everyone has a 'why ' and have opportunities in their life to help achieve them. It's just taking that first step and not being afraid. JJ brings that point home over and over again in the book. I recommend this book to everyone.

This book is an accessible, sincere read with lots of good takeaways for anyone. The accessibility is one of my favorite parts; you can really see how you might apply the book's guidance to your own situation. Because each chapter has a clear lesson and takeaway, I found myself being motivated after finishing a chapter and wanting to "get to work" on my own projects and ideas right away. Unlike other motivational pieces, this book has a genuine appeal that does not feel fictionalized in any way. JJ Birden really was one of the smallest players (if not the smallest player during his time) in a sport where size really does matter; he did not come from a privileged background, yet was successful nonetheless. This is not a reboot of the worn-out "you can do anything you put your mind to" message, but an authentic, down-to-earth set of stories and lessons you can actually use, written by someone who has actually achieved fantastic success with perseverance, dedication and good old-fashioned work ethic.
